Food brings a community together. The Clipper Café, and Percival Dining Room of South Puget Sound Community College has been serving students and faculty alike for more than two decades. In the Student Union Building, there is a regular buzz of people swarming through the café, ready to indulge in a meal. In the dining room, large windows adorn the walls with natural light, tables are dressed in attractive decor, and the sound of jazz fills your ears.
The hardworking teams behind the grub are associated with the Culinary program, either as instructors or students. Chef Scott Mclean, one of the Culinary Arts Professors, explains that “We are trying to replicate the industry and intensity of the kitchen,” and the program tries, “to stick to local products as much as possible to create a farm-to-table experience.” Food is made fresh daily, and is a true representation of the student’s diligence in their culinary careers.
The Percival Dining Room, located on campus, is a fine dining atmosphere designed to serve dinner parties or memorable events. Laecey Mclean, the hospitality fine dining instructor, and Chef Scott are “building the culinary team together, and have a million ideas.” McLean feels that, “our purpose is to make everyone feel welcome. We have affordable pricing for fine dining food, and we are more than willing to accommodate to students.”
The Clipper Café is focused on providing fast service and quality cuisine. The atmosphere encourages feelings of inclusion and delight as customers walk away with loaded plates of food. Emily Hutson, the lead cook and manager of the Clipper Café, says that by taking initiative on the staff, one is responsible for “suiting diverse dietary needs, or special requests, so that everyone can come and feel welcome.” Gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian choices are available. A food service worker Sabella Barton exclaims, the staff are “very kind and fun” people, they brighten up the café even more.
